Some European figure skating fans sometimes complain that
their opportunities to watch skating shows aren't as abundant
as those offered to North American audiences. While this may
be true, the truth is also that
there are several skating shows and tours in Europe as well.
One of them is the Belgian edition of Stars on Ice. Held in
Antwerp, the shows are about to become a tradition as preparations
are made for the third consecutive year. The first two years
were very successful, offering such international skating
celebrities as professionals Katarina Witt, Ilia Kulik, Katia
Gordeeva, Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio, Margarita
Drobiazko and Povilas Vanagas, Shae-Lynn Bourne and Viktor
Kraatz, Oksana Baiul and others, as well as top eligible skaters
like Kevin van der Perren, Takeshi Honda, Miki Ando and Stefan
Lindemann.
Since its creation in 1986 by Olympic legend, Scott Hamilton,
“Stars on Ice” has known tremendous success in
the United States and the rest of the world. For more information
about “Stars on Ice” visit the website www.starsonice.com.
Ticket prices have been reasonable and the Sportpaleis has
been near filled with enthusiastic crowds. Many spectators
are expected to return for the third time this fall. The shows,
put on by the IMG and sponsored by Proximus, are top class
entertainment leaving no one disappointed. With the Olympic
Winter games in Torino coming up, the shows will have an Olympic
theme. The eligible part of the cast, all present Olympians,
will skate
their Olympic programs. The audience will also be able to
watch some of the best professional skaters. The show will
be in two parts with an intermission. Each act will offer
individual performances as well as dazzling group numbers
and flashy costumes.
An IMG press release announces the return of Olympic gold
medallists Ilia Kulik
and Ekaterina Gordeeva
to the shows this year. Returning are also Barbara
Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio. They will
be joined by Tatiana Navka
and Roman
Kostomarov, the Russian ice dancers who won
the gold at the last two World Championships and Emanuel
Sandhu, who’s ranked 3rd in the world.
Of course Belgian star Kevin
van der Perren will appear in the role of
ambassador of the “Proximus Stars on Ice 2005”.
In the next few days a couple of additions to the cast will
be announced.
Absolute Skating will give a few lucky people the opportunity
to win tickets to the shows and a meet-and-greet with one
of the skaters, so keep checking the site.
